What is a Prop Bet?

A prop bet or proposition bet is a sports betting wager that is not tied to the final score or outcome of a game but rather a particular occurrence or non-occurrence of an event not directly affecting the outcome of the game.

Prop bet examples can include but are not limited to:

  • Stat obtained by a specific player
  • Which team scores first
  • Which player scores first
  • Points scored in a particular quarter
  • Color of the Gatorade dumped on winning coach
  • Length of time for the national anthem

What are Player Prop Bets?

Player props are bets on specific stat categories on specific players and are undoubtedly the most popular type of prop bet.

Typically, these player prop bets will be either an over or an under bet on a particular stat line.

For example, the oddsmakers may set a prop line of 75.5 receiving yards for a specific player and you can bet the player will go over this value of 75.5 or stay under the 75.5 receiving yards mark. An Over bet wins if the player notches 76 or more receiving yards in the game.

On the other hand, the Under wins if the player finishes with 75 or fewer yards in the game.

How are Prop Lines Set?

Each player will have his own appropriate prop lines based on his own skill level, matchup, and bookmaker’s expectation. The bookmakers release prop lines based on their own internal estimates and bets expected to be received.

The most common player props often have more accurate lines such as

  • passing yards
  • passing touchdowns
  • rushing yards
  • NBA points scored
  • Rebounds
  • MLB strikeouts
  • and more

Player Prop Bet Example

Here is a Passing Yards prop bet for Joe Burrow, the quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals. You can bet the Over and would win if Joe Burrow throws for 267 yards or more.

On the other hand, you could bet the Under and if Burrow finishes with 272 or fewer yards you would cash.

Betting Player Props on DraftKings

Draftkings offers props under respective categories titled with the word “props”.

It is simple to find once you select a game from their menu.

Why Prop Bets?

There is more value or edge for the sports bettor in betting player props than betting point spreads, moneylines or team totals.

Why? There are so many players and player props are relatively new in comparison. The sportsbooks have a harder time accurately determining an appropriate stat line for every player which means more opportunities for astute sports bettors.

The books and odds makers are very good at pricing team point spreads and predicting who will win. It is a science and has been mastered over the last few decades. Player props are new and there are TONS of players, matchup nightmares, and obscure stat lines to find gems.

That is what we hunt for at BetPrep and we have built the tools to help you find the value.
